What Is the NHTSA vPIC Database and How Does VIN Decoding Work?

The NHTSA vPIC database is the US government's official source for VIN decoding. Here is how it works, what it contains, and why it is the most authoritative source.

The Vehicle Product Information Catalog (vPIC) is maintained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It is the official US government database for VIN decoding and vehicle product information. When manufacturers submit vehicles for regulatory approval, they provide detailed VIN pattern information that NHTSA stores in vPIC. This makes vPIC the most authoritative source for VIN decoding in the United States.

What vPIC Contains

The vPIC database contains VIN pattern data submitted by manufacturers, including:

  • WMI codes and manufacturer names
  • Vehicle type (passenger car, truck, motorcycle, bus, etc.)
  • Make, model, and trim level
  • Body type and body class
  • Engine type, displacement, cylinders, and fuel type
  • Drive type (front-wheel, rear-wheel, all-wheel)
  • Restraint system types
  • Doors, seat rows, and GVWR ratings
  • Plant of manufacture (city and state/country)

How the API Works

NHTSA provides a free, public REST API at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/api. The API accepts a 17-character VIN and returns the decoded vehicle information in JSON or XML format. No API key is required. Our VIN decoder uses this API to provide free, authoritative decoding for any VIN.

vPIC's Limitations

vPIC is only as complete as the manufacturer data submitted to it. Some obscure manufacturers, older model years, or import vehicles may have incomplete or missing VDS patterns in the database. In these cases, the WMI and model year will decode correctly (these are standardized), but the vehicle descriptor section may return partial results.

vPIC also does not contain vehicle history, ownership, accident, or title information. It is a product specification database, not a history database. For history, you need a separate vehicle history report.

Updating the Database

Manufacturers submit new VIN patterns to NHTSA when they introduce new models or change VDS encoding for an existing model. NHTSA updates the vPIC database periodically. For very new model introductions, there may be a brief lag before vPIC returns complete results.
