Vehicle Assembly Plant Codes

Position 11 of a VIN is the assembly plant code — a single letter assigned by the manufacturer to identify which factory built the vehicle. Unlike WMI codes (which are standardized by NHTSA), plant codes are manufacturer-specific and can reuse the same letter for different plants across different brands.

How Assembly Plant Codes Work

Plant codes are assigned internally by each manufacturer — there is no single universal standard. The letter A might mean a completely different plant for Toyota vs. Ford vs. Honda. That's why you always need to know the manufacturer (from the WMI, positions 1–3) before interpreting the plant code (position 11).
